After reportedly getting into a fight with a police officer and each other, two city officials in Boston were put on unpaid leave.
Lawyers for Marwa Khudaynazar, 27, and Chulan Huang, 26, say they were both arrested early Thursday morning by Boston Police after Khudaynazar called 911 to report a fight at an apartment in the city’s Chinatown neighborhood. Court documents obtained by local Fox affiliate WFXT show this happened. Police said that Huang and Khuaynazar were dating and were fighting because Huang found out that Khuaynazar had been seeing someone else.
Huang is said to have told an officer, “She went on a date with my boss.” “Then they booked a hotel room, and she came here to make fun of me.”
The papers say Huang took Khudaynazar’s phone to read her private texts, which made her physically react. “She began punching me and then she began biting me,” he told the cops.
After separating the two, police saw bite marks on Huang’s chest and arms.
WCVB, a local ABC affiliate, said that Khudaynazar told cops that Huang had cheated on her first, which is what made her go on a date with his boss. Then she said Huang was “holding onto her wrists and wouldn’t let go,” so she bit him to protect herself.
According to the papers, she changed her mind after the cops arrested Huang. The woman told the cops, “I don’t want that. I was lying. I swear to god I was lying. I bit him. He has bite marks on him.”
Then Khudaynazar reportedly called 911 again and tried to stop police from leading Huang through the doorway. After that, she reportedly cursed at the officer and hit him. Because of what she was accused of doing, she was taken and led to a police car.
Huang is said to have told police, “We both work for the city, this is unnecessary,” while he was being arrested.
Khudaynazar is the head of the Office of Police Accountability in Boston. Huang manages businesses in Huang’s neighbourhood for the city’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion. After the arrests were made public, both of their professional bios were taken down from the official city government page.
Charges were brought against Khudaynazar for hitting a police officer and hitting a family member. Huang was charged with hitting and assaulting a family member. Both pleaded not guilty when they were brought to court on Thursday.
Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston told WCVB, “Obviously, the accusations are very upsetting.” It’s never okay to hurt a police officer or someone else in our neighbourhood. “It is an honour to serve the public,” she said. Even though we’re all people, we have to act in a way that matches the standards we have for all city workers.
While the probe is going on, both city workers are on unpaid leave.
