A Pennsylvania man will spend the rest of his life in prison after killing his girlfriend and sending a horrifying video of her body to a friend.
Miguel A. Rodriguez, 40, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Nemesis Florentino. The tragic incident happened on September 11, 2022, inside Rodriguez’s home in East Hempfield Township.
After shooting Florentino in the head, Rodriguez called a friend and shockingly sent a video showing her lifeless body. The friend immediately contacted police.
When officers arrived, Rodriguez refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside the home for nearly five hours. During the standoff, he fired over 100 rounds at the police, making it too dangerous for first responders to reach Florentino and possibly save her life.
Eventually, Rodriguez opened the door and pointed his rifle at police. A Special Emergency Response Team officer shot him in the shoulder, and Rodriguez finally surrendered around 6:30 a.m.
At trial, prosecutors called his actions “despicable” and said the video call showed a shocking level of cruelty. Judge Craig Stedman told Rodriguez, “Society needs to be protected from you.”
Rodriguez was sentenced to life in prison without parole, plus an additional 41½ to 85 years for other charges, including assaulting police officers, reckless endangerment, and obstructing law enforcement.
In court, Rodriguez said he was “very remorseful” and blamed drug use for clouding his judgment. He asked Florentino’s family for forgiveness.
