Man shot by preschool security guard in SW Portland dies from his injuries

The man who was

shot by a preschool security guard

in Southwest Portland on May 8 died from his injuries Friday night, police say.

Manuel Castillo Garza IV, 32, of Wilsonville, was shot around 11:50 a.m. in a parking lot between the Fanno Creek Medical Clinic and The Gan preschool in the 6600 block of Southwest Capitol Highway, Portland police said in a statement.

While the circumstances of the shooting remain murky, the preschool said that the guard — who police have not publicly identified — was “threatened and assaulted” before he allegedly shot Garza.

Dr. Gregg Coodley, the medical director of the nearby clinic, said that Garza was laying on the ground next to a lime-green Hyundai SUV, and had what appeared to be a bullet wound in his left abdomen. Coodley said he applied pressure to the wound until emergency responders arrived and took Garza to the hospital.

Police have not announced any arrests in the shooting, but said on May 8 that the guard has been cooperating with officers during the investigation. On Saturday, police announced that the Portland Police Homicide Unit is taking over the case after Garza’s death.
