Many people know that Massachusetts has some of the best schools and universities in the country. However, the Bay State has also been home to one of the scariest abandoned schools in the United States. If you’re interested in the creepy past of some parts of the state, you should check out this spot to see what’s going on.
Love Exploring, a well-known travel magazine, just came out with its list of the 15 creepiest abandoned schools and colleges in the country. You almost thought that one of those schools would be in Massachusetts for some reason. The list did not let me down at all.
Where is the Massachusetts location of one of the spookiest abandoned schools in the U.S.?
Belchertown is the name of a town in Hampshire County that is about 20 miles northeast of Springfield, MA. Where are you? The Belchertown State School used to be one of the scariest empty schools in the United States. As you might expect, some of the social media posts about the place have a creepy vibe.
To learn more about this creepy place’s past, “Love Exploring” has a lot to say about why it’s one of the scariest old schools in the country:
…When it opened in 1922 as the Belchertown State School for the Feeble-Minded, the establishment was considered a model for educating people with disabilities. But years of underfunding and overcrowding led to awful conditions and terrible suffering. The situation reportedly improved after a 1972 class-action lawsuit exposed the neglect and abuse, though the school struggled to shake off its bad reputation and closed in 1992…
…The buildings sat empty for years before a plan to redevelop the 400,000-square-foot property was agreed in 2012. Several structures have since been pulled down…while an assisted-living facility and early childhood education centre have been built. In early 2024, the town green-lit a 100-unit housing development – the largest project yet…
Several redevelopment projects are currently happening at the facility, according to the “Daily Hampshire Gazette.” The power plant is currently being torn down.
Though it’s important to remember the state school and its history, it’s also good to know that improvements have been made to the building and grounds to assist the nearby community.
