The new area code will begin to be used once the supply of central office codes under the existing area codes exhausts.

Earlier this year, the Commission approved an overlay area code to be added to the existent 347, 718, 917, 929 area codes in order to meet the increasing demand for phone numbers.

The current area codes are expected to exhaust towards the end of 2026 and new area code will be assigned to newly issued telephone numbers in the region regardless of service type.

The new area code is projected to provide telephone numbers for approximately 11 years.

For those who already have phone numbers under the 718, 347, or 646 area codes, there’s no immediate need to worry. Your number will stay the same, and you’ll still be able to dial as usual.

However, there’s one key change that will affect all New Yorkers, regardless of their area code: dialing a local number will now require 10-digit dialing.

This means that even if you’re calling someone within the same area code, you’ll need to dial the full 10-digit number (area code + phone number), instead of just the 7-digit number as was previously allowed.
