It was reported this week that efforts to combine the state of New York’s budget will finally be allowed to move forward. This will finally make the famous inflation rebate cheque a reality, as the state’s governor Kathy Hochul has promised for many months.
Both business and income taxes will not go up.
In a website report, Hochul reaffirmed that her government “will provide $2 billion in direct cash assistance to more than 8 million New Yorkers with checks of up to $400 per family.” This was the end of a story that started with bigger numbers that promised a little more, but the news came with another “relief”: there are no plans to raise income taxes or state business taxes in the budget for fiscal year 2026.
How much will the people who are eligible for the cheque for help get?
As we already said, New York State’s “Inflation Rebate” will finally give $2 billion in direct payments to 8.6 million taxpayers across the state in 2025. The money will come from the state’s extra sales tax income, which is caused by inflation.
This benefit is easy to get, and like most programs of this kind, it depends on the person who wants it having paid their taxes on time and correctly. “Up to $400 per family” is the amount set by the state. It is thought to be for families making less than $300,000 a year, but this has not been confirmed.
