New York City Mayor Eric Adams is ill and is limiting his public schedule this week as he has medical tests, his office said.
“Over the last few days, Mayor Adams hasn’t been feeling his best,” Fabien Levy, a City Hall spokesperson, said in a statement on Sunday evening.
Levy said the mayor had several doctors’ appointments and had scheduled routine medical tests. Levy gave no further details about the mayor’s illness.
Adams’ public schedule for Monday, circulated soon after Levy’s statement, listed only an 8 a.m. EST (1300 GMT) meeting with senior administration officials. He also released a statement touting a record-high number of private-sector jobs in New York City.
Besides running the most populous city in the nation, Adams is preparing for a criminal trial in April on federal charges of corruption, which comes alongside his reelection campaign for a second term. Adams says he has not broken the law and did nothing wrong.
His office said Adams remained in charge through his illness, although it promised to let New Yorkers know if he ended up delegating his duties.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been feeling unwell and is scaling back his public appearances, according to a statement from his office. While the exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed, his office assured the public that he is receiving care and continuing to perform essential duties behind the scenes.
The announcement has raised questions among New Yorkers, many of whom are wondering about the mayor’s health and how his reduced presence will impact the day-to-day operations of the city. Despite his illness, the mayor’s office emphasized that Adams remains committed to leading the city and is working closely with his team to address ongoing issues facing the city.
A Brief Absence from the Spotlight
In the statement, the mayor’s office confirmed that Eric Adams would be reducing his public engagements for the time being to focus on his health. This means that he will not be attending certain events, meetings, or press conferences as scheduled. However, the office stressed that Adams is still actively involved in decision-making and continues to monitor key developments in the city, particularly in areas like public safety, housing, and economic recovery.
“This is a temporary adjustment, and the mayor continues to fulfill his responsibilities with the support of his dedicated team,” said a spokesperson from the mayor’s office. “He is focusing on his recovery and will resume his regular schedule once he is feeling better.”
Health and Leadership

This is not the first time a sitting mayor of New York City has faced health concerns during their time in office. However, it has sparked conversations about the physical demands placed on public figures, especially those responsible for leading one of the world’s largest cities. In the case of Mayor Adams, the decision to scale back appearances is seen as a proactive step in ensuring that his health doesn’t negatively impact his leadership.
Some New Yorkers have expressed their well wishes to the mayor, acknowledging the demanding nature of his role and the importance of taking time to recover.
“I hope Mayor Adams takes the time he needs to get better,” said one local resident. “We all want him to be in good health, especially with so many challenges facing the city right now.”
What’s Next for the Mayor’s Schedule?
While Mayor Adams is cutting down on appearances, the office has assured the public that the day-to-day functions of city government will not be disrupted. Deputy Mayor Meera Joshi and other senior staff members will continue to handle ongoing projects and initiatives in his absence. The mayor’s schedule will be adjusted as necessary, but the office emphasized that no major delays are expected in the execution of city policies.
The mayor’s health and recovery will be monitored closely, and the public will be updated if there are any changes to his condition or if additional adjustments are made to his schedule.
The Public’s Response
In the wake of the announcement, some New Yorkers have expressed concern for the mayor’s well-being, while others have offered support. As a public figure, Mayor Adams has been at the center of many high-profile initiatives, from public safety reforms to economic recovery efforts. As such, his absence from the spotlight, even if temporary, raises questions about the future direction of the city’s leadership.
“I think it’s important that Mayor Adams takes care of himself,” said another resident. “Being mayor of NYC is a huge responsibility, and health should come first. I’m sure his team will handle things in the meantime.”
As Mayor Adams takes the necessary time to focus on his health, his office assures the public that New York City’s leadership remains strong and prepared to handle the challenges of running the city. His illness is being closely monitored, and updates on his recovery will be provided as appropriate.
For now, New Yorkers can expect their city to continue moving forward, even as the mayor takes a step back to prioritize his health. The hope is that he will soon recover and return to his regular duties, ready to continue his leadership of one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
