Officials ID deputy who shot, injured man in NE Portland

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has identified Deputy Matt Hansen as

the officer

who shot

a man Friday in Portland’s Parkrose neighborhood after the man allegedly pointed a handgun at police.

Portland police had initially responded to a call about a fight between two men in the 4600 block of Northeast 116th Avenue around 3:45 p.m.

Officers detained a man briefly but released him, finding no victim, police said in a statement the day of the incident. Minutes after clearing the scene, police got a call that the man was back out in the street with a gun and that he had fired a gun.

Hansen was among those in the area who heard the call. Along with Portland Police Bureau officers, Hansen challenged the man with the gun when the man pointed it at police, authorities said.

Hansen fired a round from his patrol rifle, and the man dropped his gun.

The suspect was seriously injured and taken to a hospital. His name and condition remain undisclosed. Investigators recovered a semiautomatic handgun at the scene and property damage, including to a neighbor’s car, they said.

A second man who fired shots during the incident stayed at the scene, police said.

Hansen has been in law enforcement for 32 years and joined the sheriff’s office in February, the sheriff’s office said.
