Police say that the father of a teen who was shot and killed by police the day before hit and killed an Ohio sheriff’s officer who was working on a traffic detail near the University of Cincinnati on Friday.
The unnamed Hamilton County Sheriff’s officer was killed around 1 p.m., close to where a graduation ceremony was taking place at the university.
According to Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge, the officer was pulling people in the right direction at an intersection when he was hit.
It was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, but the officer did not make it.
He was not named on Friday. Charmaine McGuffey, sheriff of Hamilton County, called him “wonderful and dedicated.”
“I knew him, and I knew what a great person he was, and I knew what a great loss we have all suffered,” she said.
The deputy quit his job a few months ago, but the sheriff said he kept working as a “special deputy.”
The driver of the car that hit the deputy was the father of an 18-year-old boy who was shot and killed by Cincinnati police on Thursday. He was also taken to a hospital.
UC President Neville Pinto asked for a moment of silence at the start of a program in the afternoon to honor graduates.
Pinto said, “Before we start, I’m sorry to say that I need to report an incident that happened today with a Hamilton County deputy sheriff on Martin Luther King Drive.” “What happened was very bad, and I’d like to ask for a moment of silence to honor this officer.”
The killing of the officer is being looked into by the Cincinnati Police Department.
Thursday, the suspect’s son was shot and killed while police in Cincinnati chased four people they thought were car thieves. The chase lasted only six seconds.
Around 9:30 a.m., police were called to Edgewood, Kentucky, to report that a Kia SUV had been stolen. When they arrived, four suspects were inside the car and ran away, according to Fox 19 Now.
One officer chased one suspect while the other officer went after another.
Theetge said that one of the men had a gun. The suspect is said to have pointed the gun at the officer with the magazine extended. The officer then shot and killed the teen.
Two more suspects were found and put in jail, but one is still on the run.
