It’s the opener of a best-of-three series and the first-ever meeting between the college baseball powers.

Oregon State advanced to the super regional by winning four games in five days at the Corvallis Regional, punching its ticket to the next round of the NCAA baseball tournament by defeating USC 9-0 in the final. After suffering an upset in the opener, the Beavers blasted their way through the losers’ bracket, outscoring four opponents 50-6.

The Seminoles, on the other hand, breezed to three consecutive wins at the Tallahassee Regional, sweeping their way to Corvallis. They defeated Mississippi State 5-2 in a testy regional final to earn a date with Oregon State.

Probable starters:

OSU RHP Dax Whitney (6-3, 3.78 ERA) vs. Joey Volini (8-5, 3.68)

This and that:

Neither team has announced a starting pitcher. But the Beavers likely will go with Whitney, the electric 6-foot-5 freshman who won their first elimination game in the regional, and the Seminoles are expected to start Volini, who served as their Saturday starter during the regular season. … Whitney has been exceptional over the last month, going 3-0 in four starts, during which he allowed five runs, 12 hits and recorded 29 strikeouts over 22 innings. That includes last week’s impressive performance against TCU in the regional, which saw Whitney strike out 12 and allow just two runs over 6 innings. … Volini is coming off two short stints. He was chased after 3 1/3 innings (and 52 pitches) in a loss to North Carolina in the ACC tournament, then departed after three innings (and 45 pitches) because of a weather delay against Bethune-Cookman in the Tallahassee Regional. Volini has suffered defeats in four of his last five outings. (

UPDATE:

Whitney and Volini have been announced as starters) … Caraway enters the weekend as perhaps the hottest hitter in college baseball, batting .530 with five home runs, one double, 10 RBIs, nine runs scored and seven walks in five postseason games. Caraway belted a home run in each of the Beavers’ five regional games, equaling the school-record for consecutive games with a homer and delivering the most by any Oregon State player in any postseason in school history. … The Beavers 9-0 win over USC in the Corvallis Regional final was their 10th shutout in postseason history and first since 2018, when they defeated Arkansas 5-0 in the championship game of the College World Series. … The series will arguably feature the two best shortstops in college baseball in Aiva Arquette (OSU) and Alex Lodise (FSU). Arquette enters the game hitting .352 with 18 homers, 16 doubles, 65 RBIs and 66 runs scored. Lodise, meanwhile, is one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. He’s hitting .405 with 17 homers, 18 doubles, 67 RBIs and 61 runs scored. … Florida State’s lineup boasts seven regulars hitting .310 or better and four with 16 or more home runs. … OSU junior outfielder Gavin Turley hit three homers in the Corvallis Regional and now holds the program record for postseason home runs with seven. … The Beavers are playing in the 10th super regional in program history, including the eighth in Corvallis. … Florida State is making its 19th super regional appearance, the most by any program since the format was created, and is seeking its 25th trip to the College World Series.
