The
Mitch Canham
era has its first College World Series berth.
Oregon State
unleashed a barrage of home runs, hitting them early and often to beat Florida State 14-10 Sunday night to win the Corvallis Super Regional at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers scored 13 runs in the first three innings and never looked back to take third and deciding game of the super regional. OSU worked over six Florida State pitchers for five home runs, including a grand slam by
Trent Caraway
and a three-run shot by
Canon Reeder.
Oregon State (47-14-1) will make its eighth College World Series appearance, and first under Canham since taking over the program from Pat Casey and interim coach Pat Bailey following the 2019 season. The Beavers won national titles in 2006, 2007 and 2018.
The Beavers, who played a road-heavy independent schedule to earn the NCAA tournament’s overall No. 8 seed, won the Corvallis regional and super regional to land in the College World Series. Oregon State opens the CWS against Louisville, which needed three games to beat Miami in its super regional.
The only meeting between OSU and Louisville came in the 2013 College World Series. The Beavers won 11-4.
The College World Series begins Friday, and runs through June 23.
The Beavers cracked 12 hits, two each from Caraway, Aiva Arquette, Gavin Turley and Tyce Peterson. Caraway and Reeder combined for seven RBIs. Six Beavers scored two runs each.
Oregon State pitching took its lumps, but proved good enough on a night when the Beavers’ offense lit up Goss Stadium. Starter James DeCremer and five OSU relievers gave up 17 hits, but worked their way out of jams several times to keep Florida State from seriously threatening.
The Seminoles landed the opening blow, when Max Williams blasted a two-run homer to left in the first inning. But the fireworks for the next hour belonged to Oregon State.
The Beavers started the show with a seven-run first inning. Three of the first four hitters reached base, with Caraway scoring on AJ Singer’s fielder’s choice. Peterson and Jacob Krieg then produced back-to-back run-scoring singles to give OSU a 3-2 lead. Reeder followed with a mammoth shot over the left field fence for a three-run homer. It became 7-2 when Carson McEntire blasted a homer to left.
After Florida State trimmed the deficit to 7-3, Oregon State ran away with a six-run third. After loading the bases with one out, Caraway crushed a grand slam to center field. Two hitters later, Turley took the same route, hitting a two-run homer to center to give Oregon State a 13-3 lead.
From that point for the Beavers, it was about getting outs. Florida State cut into the lead by scoring two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Oregon State dodged further damage, forcing the Seminoles to leave a combined seven runners during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Zach Kmatz gave OSU a lift on the mound, setting down seven consecutive hitters as the lead remained 14-8 after eight. Nelson Keljo got the final two outs to set off an Oregon State celebration.
