Police K-9 Attacks Off-Duty Officer in Greenfield After Getting Loose

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — Greenfield officials say that an off-duty cop was seriously hurt Monday when a Greenfield police dog got involved.

Someone from the Greenfield Police Department said that early investigations show that K-9 Ace escaped from the home of Greenfield Police Officer Freeman while the officer was not there, around 8 p.m. on May 12.

A representative for Ace said that Ace met a neighbour who was an off-duty New Palestine police officer and bit the officer, hurting him very badly. The cop was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis to get help.

During the fight, the cop was bitten by Ace but was still able to restrain the dog, which killed it, the spokesperson said.

Chief of Police Brian Hartman said, “During this very hard time, our thoughts, prayers, and full support are with him and his family.” “He will have our support while he gets better.” We also want Officer Freeman and the rest of the Greenfield Police Department to know how sorry we are for the loss of K9 Ace. Ace was a dedicated service animal and a valuable member of our department.

Police said there was no longer a danger to the public.

The department said that they are looking into what happened and “thoroughly reviewing our procedures and safeguards to determine what steps must be taken to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.”
