A
man shot by a Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy
Friday afternoon fired several rounds in the Northeast Portland Parkrose neighborhood and pointed a gun at officers, the Portland Police Bureau reported.
North Precinct officers responded to reports of two men fighting in the 4600 block of Northeast 116th Avenue at 3:43 p.m., according to the bureau. A suspect was briefly detained, but no crime victim was found. Officers released the suspect and cleared the scene at 4:53 p.m.
At 5:06 p.m., officers responded to a second call in the same block, this time reporting that the man had returned to the street and fired a shot.
An on-duty sheriff’s deputy in the area arrived first. As Portland police officers made their way to the scene, additional gunshots rang out. Together with the deputy, officers challenged the suspect with the gun in the middle of Northeast 116th Avenue, just south of Sandy Boulevard.
According to police, the suspect pointed the handgun at officers, and the deputy fired a round from his patrol rifle. The suspect dropped the gun. An ambulance was called as officers moved in to provide first aid. A semiautomatic handgun was seized as evidence.
The man, who police have not yet identified, was seriously injured. He was taken to an area hospital, where his condition is unknown, according to the bureau.
Members of the Portland Police Homicide Unit and East County Major Crimes Team responded to the scene, as did Portland police Chief Bob Day and Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey-O’Donnell. The homicide unit is leading the investigation. Preliminary reports indicate another man fired shots during the incident. That man, who lived in the neighborhood, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No arrests have been made.
Detectives are interviewing witnesses and have found some property damaged during the shootout. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Detective Brian Sims (
