Portland police arrested three protesters late Wednesday
outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility
after two allegedly started a fire against the building and another allegedly punched and tried to choke a police officer.
Portland police say they witnessed a man stacking flammable material against the ICE building at 4310 S. Macadam Ave., and another man walking up and placing a lit flare on the material, starting a fire at 9:50 p.m., according to their statement.
At 10:44 p.m., as police officers attempted to arrest the suspects — identified as 34-year-old Trenton E. Barker and 25-year-old Austin J. Deever — a third protester punched and tried to choke a police officer. The officer was not seriously injured, the statement said.
Police identified the third person as Geovanna Carrasco, 27.
All three were arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. They were released just after midnight.
Police have been monitoring the building as relatively small protests have bubbled up in the wake of large-scale protests in Los Angeles over federal immigration raids.
Tensions escalated in California as President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard and marines to the city.
On Wednesday around 7:20 p.m., Portland police said officers observed federal law enforcement “deploying munitions as vehicles were exiting the ICE facility,” according to
a post on X
.
On Monday,
Portland police Chief Bob Day said officers monitoring the protests are there to address criminal behavior
and not assist with immigration enforcement. His statement came after Portland officers cleared a barricade set by protesters early Sunday for an ICE contractor.
In a statement, Day called the three arrests Wednesday “strictly focused on criminal actions, and not constitutionally protected free speech.”
