The PDX World Naked Bike Ride is one of Portland’s most well-known events, and on Saturday night, thousands of naked or almost naked people and at least twice as many bicycle wheels took to the streets of Northeast Portland.
Around 6:30 p.m., the march assembled at Grant Park. They traveled through Northeast Sandy and down to Southeast Portland after about two and a half hours of pre-ride festivities.
The well-known event featured a number of Portland mainstays, including Caesar the No Drama Llama and a drum circle. In Grant Park’s field, a large number of bicyclists painted political statements on one another.
As usual, the route was kept secret until the last minute to minimize the crowds that might endanger bikers in nothing but their birthday suits. Many onlookers gathered to watch the meeting spot in spite of the efforts.
The 23-year-old event is supposedly more than just a showcase for Portland’s well-known eccentricity; it’s also a protest for increased exposure for cyclists, body positivity, and less reliance on oil.
In case you missed it, don’t worry. Another group of au naturale bikers will soon be taking to the streets of Portland. There will be another naked bike ride on Saturday, August 9, which is not related to the first one.
