Possible sighting of Washington man wanted in deaths of his 3 daughters prompts Idaho search

Federal investigators in Idaho are investigating a possible sighting of a father from Washington who is wanted in relation to the killings of his three daughters over the weekend.

A family playing close to a campsite in Idaho’s Sawtooth National Forest reported to the U.S. Marshals Service Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force on Saturday that they had spotted a man who fit Travis Decker’s description.

Since a Washington sheriff’s deputy discovered his truck and the deaths of his three daughters—9-year-old Paityn Decker, 8-year-old Evelyn Decker, and 5-year-old Olivia Decker—at a campsite outside of Leavenworth, Washington, on June 2, Decker has been on the wanted list. Three days after he failed to bring the kids back to their mother’s house in Wenatchee, which is approximately 100 miles east of Seattle, after a planned visit, the find was made.

On June 10, authorities in Washington reported that they thought they had seen Decker, a former soldier, close to a secluded alpine lake in a well-liked Cascade Range camping destination. After hikers reported sighting a lone hiker who seemed unprepared for the weather, tracking teams investigated the tip.

However, he has not been located.

After the task force’s statement was made public on Sunday, Eric Toms, supervisory deputy U.S. Marshal for the District of Boise, reported that the department was getting more public tips. In an email, Toms stated that a search team comprising the Camas County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Marshals Service set out on Monday and that the agency was reviewing each tip.

According to him, authorities intended to talk to locals as well as others who were camping or having fun nearby. Decker has a history of hitchhiking, he added, and he advised drivers not to pick up any hitchhikers.

A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered by the Marshals Service for information that leads to Decker’s capture.
