Readers respond: Elk’s return could symbolize Portland renewal

The cherished elk statue in Portland might soon be restored to its former location on Southwest Main Street after being vandalized, thanks to the efforts of a few committed residents (Iconic Portland elk statue poised to return with renovations; construction will delay traffic in downtown, July 4).

Is this the catalyst for a revitalized society? Is now the right moment to cease allowing those who destroy public property to do so at the expense of kids, parks, and streets?

Is it possible for Portland’s City Council to stop the city’s decline and bring back a Portland free of gunfire beneath our iconic Central Library? Calls to address downtown Portland’s neglect are renewed after a deadly shooting outside the Central Library on July 2.

Let the elk’s return serve as a metaphor for fortitude and accountability.
