Readers respond: Traffic violation enforcement can help raise revenue

(Portland worries basic street repair is at jeopardy after sweeping state transportation bill implodes, July 1) I would want to address the transportation financing concerns that influence state and local budgets.

I find it disappointing that raising the gas tax and the price of car registration and title seems to be the only viable choice. There are a number of roadways in Northeast Portland where drivers are exceeding the posted speed limit by up to 20 miles per hour. The budget would increase if these speeding drivers were ticketed and equipment to identify speed and traffic light violators was installed. Citing cars with expired registrations should also be a top priority because I’ve noticed a lot of them with 2022 expiration dates.

Many of these alternatives would be affordable and would not impose additional costs on the law-abiding populace.
