Sacramento Kings Appoint Scott Perry as New General Manager

Scott Perry was hired as general manager by the Sacramento Kings. The team hopes that Perry can help them get back to the playoffs after missing out on the last two years’ play-in game.

The Kings agreed to terms with Perry last week, just hours after letting go of Monte McNair. The deal was made public on Monday. Perry will be revealed on Wednesday at a news conference.

Perry will be in charge of basketball operations and will answer to Vivek Ranadive, the owner.

“Scott brings a wealth of experience, a sharp basketball mind, and a strong track record of building talented rosters,” said Ranadive in a statement. “He shares our commitment to developing and sustaining a winning culture, and I am excited to welcome him back to Sacramento.”

In 2022–23, McNair was named NBA Executive of the Year after ending an NBA record 16-season playoff drought. However, the Kings have come close to making the playoffs each of the last two seasons, which is why the change was made.

After three months in the front office as vice president of basketball operations in 2017, Perry is back in Sacramento.

“I appreciate the opportunity to rejoin the Kings organization and help build a successful team that competes at a high level,” Perry said in a post. “I’m eager to get to work with the players and staff to continue moving the organization forward.”

Perry was hired away from the Kings to work for Scott Mills as general manager of the Knicks. After Mills was fired in 2020, Perry ran the Knicks for a short time as an acting manager. He then went back to his job as general manager under team president Leon Rose for the 2022–23 season.

Perry worked for the Pistons for more than ten years as a front office manager. He helped put together a team that won the 2004 NBA Finals and went to six straight Eastern Conference Finals.

He is now the fifth chief executive officer of the Kings since Ranadive took over the team in 2013. He will try to do the same thing with them. In that time, the Kings have had nine coaches, including interims. They also have the fifth-worst record in the NBA.

One of the first things that will be decided is what will happen with temporary coach Doug Christie. Christie went 27-24 after taking over when Mike Brown was fired in December.

Sabonis, DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray, and Malik Monk are the main players that Perry takes over. The Kings have a 3.8% chance of moving into the top four in the lottery, so he probably won’t get a first-round pick. If that doesn’t happen, Atlanta will get the pick as part of a deal for Kevin Huerter.
