Everyone seems to be talking about Kentucky freshman Kahlil Whitney and we’re still two months from Big Blue Madness.
Everyone has seen Whitney’s leaping ability after he jumped over a player to complete a dunk earlier this week and after an impressive showing at the Nike Camp over the weekend, a lot of people believe he has lottery pick potential written all over him.
In fact, Sam Vecenie of The Athletic thinks Whitney can be a top 5 NBA Draft pick if everything comes together at Kentucky. He had the following to say on his Game Theory Podcast.
“That dude is nasty as an athlete. He looked more like an NBA wing than Stanley Johnson out there, who was playing in those scrimmages. Kahlil Whitney is a big dude and the explosiveness is just there. When he really wants to defensively he can be a pest and a menace. He was causing problems for DeMar DeRozan (San Antonio Spurs guard) in a way that was surprising to me.”
Vecenie did mention that Whitney’s shooting ability is a concern, along with his handle. However, those things will improve with attention to detail at Kentucky and if they do, look out.
“If it comes together this year at Kentucky, he is an outside chance to be a top five pick. That dude has everything that you’re looking for in today’s NBA.”
