Scio finally gets its Class 3A softball title with win over Dayton

After back-to-back state runner-up finishes, Scio has finally done it.

On Friday afternoon at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene, the Loggers bested Dayton 9-3 to grab the OSAA Class 3A softball state championship.

It’s the first time Scio (27-1) has won the softball state title, despite playing in each of the last three championship games.

Things got going early on Friday afternoon. Scio opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Myleigh Cooper scored on a wild pitch. Meagan Trissel then scored two on an RBI single. Later in the inning, Trissel was walked home.

The Loggers added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning, as both Cam Dalke and Macy Johnson scored on an error to make it a 6-0 Scio lead.

Dayton was finally able to find some success in the top of the third inning, as Macie Wilson scored on a double by Lillie Brooks.

But Scio kept moving on offense. In the bottom of the third inning, Dalke hit an RBI single to score Cooper.

Dayton stayed alive in the top of the fourth inning, as Rachel Baumholtz hit a triple to right center field to score both Rylie Hedgecock and Jayden Meyer-Mayhew, cutting Scio’s lead to 7-3.

The Loggers seemed to put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Dalke hit a triple to center field to score Johnson and Cooper and widen the score to 9-3.

Cooper pitched the whole game for the Loggers, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out eight Dayton batters.

Gabby Chupp was the starting pitcher for Dayton. In 1.1 innings pitched, she allowed five hits, five earned runs and walked four, while striking out three batters. Baumholtz came in to pitch 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and walked two while striking out one. Charly Upmeyer came in for the final two innings, allowing one hit, one earned run and walking one while striking out three Scio batters.

The Loggers ended their 2023 and 2024 seasons watching someone else hoist the Class 3A softball title. In 2023, Scio fell 1-0 in 12 innings to Burns/Crane and in 2024, the Loggers lost 9-1 to South Umpqua.

Dayton (26-3) has played in six of the last nine softball state championship games, winning in 2015 and 2018.
