Seriously injured bicyclist survives night in ditch after driver hits her, flees

A driver in Washington County struck a bicyclist, sending her into a ditch where she spent the night “outside and alone” until passersby found her Sunday morning with serious leg and facial injuries, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene on Northwest Dairy Creek Road shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday. Paramedics then took the unidentified woman to a hospital in an ambulance.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation.

Later in the morning, just before 11 a.m., deputies helped another bicyclist who was injured after a driver hit him at Northwest Old Cornelius Pass Road and Cornelius Pass Road.

Witnesses said the cyclist, a 55-year-old man from Northwest Portland, crossed traffic suddenly. He was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

The driver remained on the scene. The bicyclist’s family has been notified, and Washington County deputies are not investigating the crash as a crime, authorities said.
