A few people in the United States who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will get two payouts in May instead of one. At first look, this might seem like good news, but it’s actually just a change in the payment dates and not an extra bonus or extra help.
Seniors, people with disabilities, and people who don’t have many resources can get help from SSI every month. It is not the same as getting Social Security retirement benefits, and payments are generally made on the first of every month. The Social Security Administration (SSA), on the other hand, moves the deposit up if that date happens on a weekend or holiday. That’s exactly what’s going on this month. Because of the way the calendar works, two payments will be entered in May, even though one of them is for the following month.
Double SSI payment in May
SSI payments for May 2025 will arrive at two different times:
- The first was issued on May 1, as usual.
- The second will be sent on Friday, May 30, but corresponds to the June check.
Why is this payment made early? Because June 1 is a Sunday and the SSA doesn’t make payments on weekends. In order to avoid delays, the deposit is pushed up to the last business day of the month before.
People who are supposed to get money will see two deposits in May, but they should remember that there will be no payment in June because the money has already been placed. This isn’t a reward or extra help; it’s just a change to make things easier.
Who gets both SSI payments?
In order for the system to record both deposits, the beneficiary must be active in the program in both May and June. In addition, the basic requirements established by the SSA must be met:
- Have very little or no income
- Not exceed the resource limits: $2,000 for single people and $3,000 for couples
- Be a U.S. citizen or have immigration status that allows access to the benefit
Another important thing is to have replied on time to regular program reviews and not had any payments stopped. If everything is okay, deposits are made immediately, so you don’t have to ask for anything else.
The most a single person can get from SSI in 2025 is $967 a month, and the most a couple can get is $1,450 a month. However, the actual amount may be different based on other income or help the family gets. The increase in the cost of living that happened in January is already built into these numbers.
This payment should have been sent to you and you haven’t seen it yet. Check your bank account or Direct Express card first. If you’re not sure about your situation, you can check it by logging in to the “my Social Security” portal or calling the SSA.
