According to Springfield police, a man carrying two knives stabbed two officers on Wednesday afternoon before being shot and killed.
According to Springfield police Lt. George Crolly, the two policemen were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment after suffering serious injuries.
A call about a disruptive individual inside a business near Gateway Street and Beltline Road was received by police at 2:37 p.m.
According to Crolly, when an officer came, they discovered someone threatening to fight and brandishing two knives, so they phoned for assistance.
Two Springfield cops were stabbed by the suspect at one point.
Deputies from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police also arrived on the scene.
According to Crolly, the suspect was shot by police when they were trying to arrest him. Whether an officer shot the person was not disclosed by Springfield police.
None of the state troopers were involved in the shooting, according to Capt. Kyle Kennedy of the state police.
Working at a nearby Jimmy John’s sandwich store, Gabe Loney said a customer raced inside and told him and other employees about the police activity outside.
He claimed that as he left the establishment through the rear door, he noticed over 40 police cars encircling Happy’s Drive-Thru Carwash, which is situated in the 3350 block of Gateway Street.
According to Loney, municipal and state police were present at the area around the car wash. According to him, the area is roughly 0.5 miles from the state police patrol station.
While detectives look into the fatal police shooting and stabbing of officers, Gateway Street is closed from Postal Way to Kruse Way.
The story is still evolving.
