Teens Arrested After Alleged Attack on Two Women at Baltimore Community Garden

Three teens were arrested on Saturday, May 3, at a community garden in Northwest Baltimore for reportedly punching an older woman and stealing her car.

Then, on Monday, a gardener at Dewees Community Garden was waiting for cops because he said two teens tried to rob him with knives.

The gardener, who didn’t want to be filmed, told WJZ that two teens with knives came up to him while he was working in his yard and demanded money. He said that he used a gardening tool to scare the kids away.

Police in Baltimore said that a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were taken in connection with the theft on Saturday. It’s not clear if they have anything to do with Monday’s theft.

Teenagers took away the gardener’s peace of mind.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, a 64-year-old woman who didn’t want to be recorded said she was working in her garden plot when she heard noise a few plots away.

She said she saw two young boys try to rob an 82-year-old worker and punch him before they came up to her and stole her keys and car.

“Finally, he caught up to me and he grabbed my phone from me,” she said. “I told them, ‘OK, hopefully that’s all they want. Leave.'” Following which he yelled, “Where are your keys?” I told them, “They’re up in the green bucket.”

The woman said that the teens made her feel unsafe in the community yard.

“I’ve gotten to know the other gardeners and they’re sweethearts and they’ve become sort of part of my family,” she said. “Every year we say, ‘See you next year,'” They’ll say “God willing,” and then the next year you’ll be like, “Oh, you’re back! I’m so glad.””

Hope for a community garden that is better

The woman told WJZ that she won’t go back to the community garden until it is safer, which could mean more lights, better locks, or a buddy system so that no one works in the garden alone.

She also says that the teens should be responsible.

“They need to be disciplined, and it was just really hard because I’m looking and they’re just not stopping,” she said. “I’m an adult, and they have power over me, and I think that was the hardest thing.”
