Millions of people in the United States who are having a hard time with money can get help from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Its goal is to make sure that everyone has access to enough food, both in terms of amount and nutritional value.
People in Texas can get these benefits with the Lone Star Card, which is a state version of the EBT card that people across the country use. It can be used at any store that takes SNAP and works like a bank card.
The program does, however, set clear limits on what can be bought. SNAP can’t be used to buy booze, tobacco, non-food items, hot or ready-to-eat meals in restaurants, or to pay for services and bills.
A lot of fresh foods are allowed by the program, as well as seeds or plants that can be grown at home. This means that a family garden is possible.
The help is for low-income families, unemployed people, and adults without children between the ages of 18 and 52. They can get benefits for up to three months every three years, unless they meet certain standards, like going to work or training programs.
It is important to note that these rules don’t affect people with disabilities or women who are pregnant; they can still use the program because they meet other requirements.
