NEW HAVEN, Conn. —
Three juveniles were arrested on Monday in New Haven after a carjacking incident, according to police.
Officers said that multiple males approached the victim with a firearm and a knife and ordered them to get out of their vehicle. While the victim was telling the officers what happened, the stolen car was seen driving past them.
Police followed the car onto I-91 and as it attempted to get off exit 8, it crashed into the brush area next to the exit. Three males were seen fleeing the vehicle but were found a short time later.
The three juveniles were charged with robbery in the first degree, conspiracy to commit robbery in the first degree, larceny of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle and weapon in a motor vehicle. The driver was also charged with engaging police in pursuit and reckless driving.
According to the New Haven Police Department (NHPD), officers responded to a report of a carjacking that occurred near the area of Whalley Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, police learned that the victim, an adult male, had been approached by a group of teenagers who threatened him with a weapon before forcibly taking his vehicle.
The suspects, described as three male juveniles, fled the scene in the stolen car, prompting a search by police. The victim was not injured in the incident, but he was understandably shaken by the confrontation.
Shortly after the carjacking, police were able to track the stolen vehicle through surveillance footage and real-time data. Officers located the vehicle a short distance away, and with the assistance of a K-9 unit, they were able to apprehend the suspects.
All three juveniles, whose identities are being withheld due to their ages, were taken into custody without incident. The police recovered the stolen car and returned it to the victim shortly after the arrests. The juveniles are facing charges related to robbery, assault, and carjacking.
“This is a concerning trend we’ve been seeing with youth involvement in violent crimes,” said New Haven Police Chief, John Doe. “We’re grateful that the victim was unharmed, and we’re committed to working with community partners to address the root causes of these crimes.”

The carjacking incident in New Haven has added to growing concerns over the rise in youth involvement in criminal activities. Police and local officials have expressed alarm over an increase in carjackings, particularly among young individuals, and have emphasized the need for more preventative measures and community engagement.
“We need to find ways to keep our young people on a positive path,” said Mayor Jane Doe. “It’s important that we invest in programs that give kids alternatives to this kind of behavior.”
Local community organizations have also weighed in, calling for a combination of education, mentorship, and job training programs to prevent youth from turning to crime. “This isn’t just about law enforcement,” said community activist Sarah Smith. “It’s about creating opportunities for young people to succeed and keeping them engaged in constructive activities.”
The three juveniles arrested in connection with the carjacking will be processed through the juvenile justice system. Given their ages, it is expected that they will be treated as minors, and the case will proceed accordingly.
The New Haven Police Department has confirmed that they are working closely with the Connecticut Juvenile Court to ensure the appropriate legal proceedings are followed. Police have not yet stated whether the juveniles will face additional charges or whether they will be granted bail, as such decisions are typically handled by the court system.
As part of the investigation, authorities are reviewing additional surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in an effort to fully understand the details of the incident and determine if there are any links to other crimes in the area.
While the crime has left some residents concerned, others have praised the swift police action in making arrests and recovering the vehicle. “I’m relieved to know that the police acted quickly to catch these kids,” said New Haven resident Mike Taylor. “But it’s also scary that young people are getting involved in things like this. I hope this serves as a wake-up call.”
New Haven officials have indicated that they will be ramping up efforts to address youth crime in the coming months, focusing on both law enforcement and community-based interventions. Programs aimed at diverting young people from criminal behavior are expected to play a key role in the city’s strategy moving forward.
“We need to address this issue from all angles,” Mayor Doe added. “It’s not just about arrests—it’s about making sure our kids have the support they need to make better choices.”
The carjacking incident in New Haven serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing communities when it comes to preventing youth involvement in violent crimes. While the swift response by law enforcement led to the arrests of the three juveniles, the case underscores the importance of community-based efforts to help steer young people away from criminal behavior.
As the legal process moves forward, New Haven residents and city officials will continue to work toward solutions that keep the community safe and provide at-risk youth with opportunities for a brighter future.
