Trail Blazers’ guard Matisse Thybulle picks up player option

According to an NBA source who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Portland Trail Blazers guard Matisse Thybulle has chosen to exercise the player option on his contract.

The news was first reported by Chris Haynes.

The Blazers agreed to trade guard Jrue Holiday to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Anfernee Simons the day before.

It is hardly unexpected that Thybulle is back. After playing in just 15 games after missing 66 due to knee and ankle ailments, he said he fully planned to return when he left last season (he did not participate in his first game in uniform).

“I am eager for us to finish a season,” he remarked. I was biting at the bit the entire season, especially as we established ourselves as a defensive club.

The 28-year-old Thybulle, who will earn $11.5 million in 2023, signed a three-year deal with the Blazers after the Philadelphia 76ers dealt him to them at the trade deadline.

He came into the 2024 training camp hoping to fight for playing time as a small forward and backup shooting guard. However, he missed two months due to a knee injury. Then, on Nov. 20, during a practice in Oklahoma City, Thybulle suffered a serious injury to his right ankle shortly before he was scheduled to return.

When he eventually returned on March 17, he had an instant influence. In 20.8 minutes per game, Thybulle averaged 7.5 points and 1.6 steals. He had a career-high three-point shooting percentage of 43.5% and a field goal percentage of 47.4%.

The Blazers have two well-regarded perimeter defenders in Thybulle and Holiday, who should help out younger guards Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe.
