Two People Killed in Fiery Tesla Crash on Highway 288 in Manvel, Police Say Speed Was a Factor

According to the Manvel Police Department, two people died in a catastrophic single-vehicle incident early Sunday morning.

The accident occurred on Highway 288, north of Croix Road in the Manvel region.

According to police, at 2:29 a.m., a Tesla Model S collided with a concrete barrier while heading southward in the northbound express lanes. When emergency crews arrived, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.

Both occupants were declared deceased on the site. It is unclear at this moment whether anyone else was in the vehicle.

Investigators believe speed had a role in the collision. According to authorities, toxicology reports are pending, therefore it is unclear whether alcohol played a role.

The incident left debris scattered across Highway 288’s main and fast lanes, necessitating a hazmat team to assist with cleanup and a short highway shutdown.

All primary lanes and the toll road’s entry ramp have been reopened.
