Two Southern California Families Celebrate New Homes Thanks to Habitat for Humanity

These days, the dream of having a home seems farther away. But two families in the Inland Empire are celebrating a wonderful gift from Habitat for Humanity Riverside and San Bernardino.

The two mobile homes were given to the families by a nonprofit. One of the families was the Johnson family, who needs special accommodations for their disabled teenage girls.

Kennedy Johnson, one of the kids, said she was glad to be doing something that many people might not think much of.

The 18-year-old girl said with a big smile, “I’ve been able to wash my hands, which is something I’ve never done.”

Kennedy and her twin sister Avery have their own space in the new house.

The girls’ mother, Kiana Douglas, said, “Just the fact that Habibta works with my family to make this home wheelchair accessible for their needs was a blessing itself.”

The teens also love making their own meals, which is another job they enjoy.

The child said, “I made English muffins and sausage.” “I was about to cry because it was so amazing.”

There is also a lot of space for them to move around and make TikTok movies. This is a big improvement from the living room they shared at their last rental home.

Their mom said, “They’re 18 now, so it’s very important for them to have their own space.”

Natalie Lopez, a single mom of three, also got a new place to live with help from the charity.

Lopez said, “I’m grateful to the core.” “It’s really a miracle for my family and me.”

When Habitat for Humanity makes homes for people in need, they pick families based on how much help they need, how hard their lives are, and how much they can afford to pay for a mortgage.

The mobile homes were moved right to the sites.

David Hahn from the charity said, “They could see their homes being brought to their land at that time.” “That was fun too, because my house is coming down the street!”

The Johnson family said that their new home was an answer to their prayers.

“This house is everything.” It’s where our family lives. Kennedy said, “It will always be in our family.”
