Two teenagers brought a stolen handgun into a Vancouver Public Schools community center on Tuesday following a nearby drive-by shooting, authorities said.
Police said an altercation broke out just after noon in a parking lot near the Jim Parsley Community Center. A male fired several rounds from a vehicle and drove off. No one was injured, but officers later found three shell casings.
Three students enrolled in programs at the Jim Parsley Center told police that they’d been shot at, the school district told parents in an email.
According to surveillance footage, one of the teens involved went to the center with a handgun wrapped in a sweatshirt, then handed it off to another teen who hid the gun inside.
Police recovered the weapon, which had been reported stolen.
The 15- and 17-year-old boys were booked into juvenile detention on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and bringing a dangerous weapon onto school grounds.
The nearby Roosevelt Elementary School went into lockdown immediately after the sound of gunfire, the district told parents in an email.
Because of the incident, all the programs at the Jim Parsley Center will switch to remote learning for the rest of the school year, the district told parents.
Police are still working to identify the shooter.
