Who has died in 2025 Portland homicides

The extraordinary wave of murders in Portland is still being followed by The Oregonian/OregonLive. The people slain in 2025 are examined here, along with our knowledge of their deaths. In 2024, there were at least 71 homicides, the majority of which were gunshots. Three police shooting deaths and a man who passed away from long-term gunshot-related problems in 2004 are included in that figure. The number of homicides in 2025 is significantly fewer than in previous years.

JANUARY

1. Portland resident Jonathan Trent, 47

When: 3:50 p.m. on Monday, January 15,

Where: Fred Meyer parking lot, 1111 N.E. 102nd Ave.

What happened: According to police’s early investigation, a Fred Meyer customer was shot and murdered in the parking lot after he attempted to stop a purse theft.

Status: According to police and prosecutors, two youths, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody a few days later on charges of robbery and murder. According to authorities, the 16-year-old is also suspected of being involved in a number of other robberies that occurred in January.

A dead shopper was discovered in a NE Portland parking lot. According to authorities, Fred Meyer was slain while attempting to prevent pocketbook stealing.

A man in NE Portland was discovered dead following an alleged robbery.

2. DUNN, Stanley Earl Jr.

When: 12:44 a.m. on Thursday, January 23.

Where: On the intersection of Oak Street and Southeast 97th Avenue

What transpired: While investigating a shooting report, police discovered a guy deceased in the street. According to the officers, no arrests were made right away.

Status: No arrests

The second gunshot death in the Hazelwood neighborhood in January was a man shot dead in SE Portland.

FEBRUARY

3. Portland resident JEREMIAH S. McKENZIE, 37

When: 9:12 p.m. on Thursday, February 20.

Where: Travel trailer next to Insley Street and Southeast 84th Avenue

Locality: Lents

What happened: When paramedics discovered a man deceased in a camper trailer under what investigators characterized as unusual circumstances, police launched a homicide investigation. He was shot, according to the police, and had been residing in the trailer.

Status: No arrests

4. Portland resident BRANDON J. SOTELO, 29

When: March 3, Monday, 11:09 p.m.

Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, 8100 block northeast

What happened: After responding to a shooting complaint, police discovered a guy with a gunshot wound. They say he passed away at a hospital later.

Status: According to the police, no arrests were made right away.

5. Portland resident CEDRELL WASHINGTON, age 32

When: March 3, Monday, 11:28 p.m.

Where: North Williams Avenue, 3400 block

Boise is the neighborhood.

What transpired: According to police, a guy was discovered dead at the site after they responded to a shooting complaint.

Status: According to the police, no arrests were made right away.

6. HUTCHISON, SHAUD LEIGH, 31

When: 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4.

Where: Oregon 99E and Northeast Gertz Road

What transpired: When police responded to an allegation of a shooting, they discovered a woman dead. The following day, they arrested her boyfriend. According to a probable cause affidavit, Aaron Rene Garza, 42, shot Hutchison in the RV where they were residing. According to the affidavit, Garza had been acting strangely prior to the murder.

Status: On March 4, Portland resident Aaron Rene Garza, 42, was taken into custody by police. He was charged with second-degree murder and checked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

7. KEVIN RHINEHART, 33, of Portland

When:Sunday, March 9, 7:03 p.m.

Where:Cascade Crossing apartments, 10535 E. Burnside St.

Hazelwood is the neighborhood.

What happened:Police found a man who died at the scene when they responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex. Residents said they overheard an argument between two children who were yelling and fighting. At some point, they said the children s fathers stepped in and fought with each other. One person then fired shots. Police said several rounds were fired and no arrests have been made.

Status:Che Bell, 35, of Portland was arrested Monday, April 7, in Killeen, Texas, on allegations of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

8. BRIANNE PARDUE, 45, of Portland

When:Monday, March 17, 12:30 a.m.

Where:Home in the 14000 block of Southeast Harrison Street

What happened:Police found a woman dead in a home when they responded to a shooting call. She was the mother of an adult son and a young daughter, a friend said, but declined to release her name.

Status: Police later said in the day said they arrested 35-year-old Joshua Thielbar on allegations of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a firearm and felon in possession of a firearm but released no other information.

9. JUNIOR GARZA, 17, of Gresham

When:Tuesday, March 18, 10:15 p.m.

Where:3000 block of Southeast 136th Avenue

Neighborhood:Powellhurst-Gilbert

What happened:Police found a young man suffering from gunshot wounds when responding to a shooting call. He died at the scene, they said.

Status:Police released no arrest information.

What happened:A man died in the hotel of a stabbing after he got into a fight in the hallway with another man, according to police and family.

Status:Police said they arrested Mitch Schoonover, 42, on March 25 on allegations of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and third-degree assault. Police later sought Anthony Staggs, 54, on a third-degree assault allegation. Staggs turned himself in on Wednesday, April 9. An indictment accuses Staggs of aiding Schoonover.

11. GALEN PIXLER, 68, of Portland

When:Thursday, March 27

Where:Porthaven Healthcare Center, 5300 block of Northeast Prescott Street

Neighborhood:Cully

What happened:A man was assaulted at the nursing home and died about two weeks later on April 10, according to police and court documents. Officers arrested another man on assault allegations. Witnesses described the attack as unprovoked and said the assailant shoved and punched the victim, who was using a walker and fell to the floor, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Status:Police arrested Reynaldo Silva, 66, at the nursing home. A grand jury later indicted him on a second-degree assault charge. Police said Silva could face new charges.

APRIL

12. JOSHUA MANAHAN, 44, of Sandy

When:Sunday, April 27, 10:20 p.m.

Where:Near the intersection of South Harbor Drive and South Harrison Street

What happened:Police found a wounded man after responding to a call about a shooting. They learned the next day that he had died at the hospital, they said.

Status:Officers found no suspects at the scene, police said.

MAY

13. FROILAN ORTIZ, 49, of Portland

When:Sunday, May 11, 7:03 a.m.

Where:Northwest Naito Parkway near the Steel Bridge

What happened:Police found a man dead after responding to a report of shots fired. A witness told police that Ortiz was arguing with a man, Sean Gunton, who lived in a tent in the area, according to a probable cause affidavit. The witness reported seeing Ortiz pull tarps off Gunton s tent and Gunton shoot Ortiz, according to the affidavit. Ortiz ran around the corner and collapsed, where officers found him.

Status:Police arrested Sean B. Gunton, 55, on May 18 on allegations of second-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

JUNE

14. UNIDENTIFIED MAN

When:Sunday, June 22, 12:26 a.m.

Where:Southeast Foster Road, in a parking lot between 62nd and 65th avenues

Neighborhood:Foster-Powell

What happened:Police found a man dead outside a closed convenience store when they responded to a stabbing call.

Status:Police found no suspects at the scene and made no immediate arrests.

15. UNIDENTIFIED MAN

When:Sunday, June 22, 3:45 a.m.

Where:Home, 6800 block of Northeast Claremont Avenue

Neighborhood:Woodlawn

What happened:Police found a man dead in a home after responding to a disturbance call. They arrested another man at the scene. Dispatch logs listed the call as a stabbing. Police have released no other details or the name of the man who was killed.

Status:Devonte T. Gibson, 31, faces allegations of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
