Man in Custody Following Wild Ride on Stolen Forklift on Maryland’s I-495

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. —

Police say a man is in custody after he allegedly stole, and eventually crashed, a forklift Thursday morning in District Heights.

According to Prince George’s County Police Department, officers first received a call about a stolen forklift around 6:40 a.m. on Westphalia Road in Upper Marlboro.

The man took off in the forklift, eventually making his way onto the Capital Beltway, investigators say. The driver crashed the forklift in the area of the 11A exit. After the crash, the driver was able to bail from the piece of construction equipment and tried to run away.

Responding officers were able to take the man into custody a short time later on Penn Belt Place in District Heights. In all, the man traveled about 1.5 miles before police stopped him. 

No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported, according to police. 

It is not yet clear what charges the man in the forklift may be facing. Close Ad
