Autumn to Begin with Unsettled Weather Featuring Rain and Wind Across the UK

United Kingdom – The start of autumn is set to bring unsettled weather across the UK, with rain, wind, and cooling temperatures predicted, according to the Met Office. As meteorological summer ends this Monday, much of the country can expect a marked change from the recent warm conditions.

With temperatures beginning to drop to an average range of 13°C to 14°C in the mornings and reaching highs of 20°C to 21°C by evening, the transition into September will be accompanied by a mix of sunshine, heavy showers, and gusty winds.

Heavy Rainfall and Weather Warnings in Southwest Scotland

Monday will especially impact the south-western parts of Scotland, with a yellow weather warning issued for rain in Dumfries and Galloway and Strathclyde between 3am and 10am. The Met Office cautions that during this period, homes and businesses could experience flooding, and travel conditions may deteriorate due to the weather.

While eastern areas may begin Monday with some sunshine, scattered showers are expected to develop in the west and spread eastwards throughout the day. These showers may be heavy, potentially accompanied by thunder and hail, moving through steadily driven by brisk winds.

“Some of these showers will be on the heavy side, maybe the odd rumble of thunder and some hail mixed in to some of them too, but they will be moving through steadily on a fairly brisk wind in the brighter moments,” said Craig Snell, meteorologist at the Met Office.

Continued Rain and Showers Through Tuesday and Beyond

On Tuesday, rain is forecast to develop across south-west England and spread eastward through most parts of England and Wales. The day is expected to be quite wet for many, as persistent heavy rain prevails in some areas.

For Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the far north of northern England, a mix of sunshine and scattered showers will continue, with some sunshine possibly returning late Tuesday in the far south-west. However, heavy showers remain a risk in that region.

“Throughout the day, some of this rain will be quite heavy and persistent, and overall, quite a wet picture for some of us,” Mr Snell added.

Temperature highs on Tuesday will vary between 17°C and 20°C, reaching up to 21°C across the south. Forecasts indicate that unsettled weather—with blustery showers and extended periods of rain—will likely persist throughout the week.

Reflection on a Possibly Record-Breaking Summer

As the UK faces these cooler and wetter conditions, the past summer was almost certainly the warmest on record. Preliminary data up to August 28 shows a mean average temperature of 16.13°C for the season.

If confirmed, this will mean that all of the UK’s top five warmest summers have occurred since the year 2000, highlighting a significant trend in rising temperatures.

Key Points to Note:

  • Autumn begins Monday with temperatures ranging from 13°C-14°C in the morning to 20°C-21°C in the evening.
  • A yellow weather warning for heavy rain is in effect for Dumfries and Galloway and Strathclyde early Monday.
  • Heavy showers, possible thunder, and hail are expected to move steadily across the UK.
  • Persistent and heavy rain will impact much of England and Wales on Tuesday.
  • The recent summer may become the UK’s warmest on record, reflecting a pattern of warming in recent decades.
