At least two people were killed Wednesday when two small planes crashed in the air at a regional airport in Arizona.
The accident that killed one person happened at the Marana Regional Airport, which is northwest of Tucson.
Officials said that at least two people had died, but they didn’t give many other information because first responders were still at the scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the planes that crashed were a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II. Both had fixed wings and one engine. The government body said it is looking into what happened.
Two people were in the Lancair and two people were in the Cessna when they crashed in the sky at about 8:25 a.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Two people on one of the planes died, according to the police. The other two people were not hurt. The police did not say what kind of plane the people who died were on.
An open field is an airport that does not have an active air traffic control tower. This is what Marana Regional Airport is.
planes instead use a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) to let other planes near the airport know where they are.
The pilot-in-command is in charge of keeping a safe space between the plane and any other planes in the area.
Still, pilots who fly into open fields must follow all Federal Aviation Administration rules, such as safe altitudes, minimum visibility requirements, and right-of-way rules.
Right away, no information was given about the deaths or how the accident happened.
Both the NTSB and the FAA are looking into what happened, with the NTSB taking the lead.
Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., wrote on X about the crash.
“I fly out of this airport often, including just a few days ago,” he said. “My thoughts are with everyone involved and their families.” “This incident is being watched by my team and I while we wait for more information.”
The crash is the most recent in a worrying string of recent plane accidents in North America.
On Monday afternoon, a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis crashed and turned over as it was arriving at Toronto Pearson Airport. Authorities say 21 people on board the plane were hurt, with injuries ranging from minor to serious. No one was killed.
On January 29, an Army helicopter and an American Airlines flight coming in to land at Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport crashed in the air, killing all 67 people on board. It was the deadliest flying accident in the United States since 2001.
Recently, there were other plane crashes in North America. On February 6, a small commuter plane on its way to Nome, Alaska, fell, killing the pilot and nine passengers. Also, on January 31, a medical transport jet carrying a child patient, her mother, and four other people crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood, setting several houses on fire.
After what happened at Reagan National Airport, the Trump government said they would review and update all air traffic control systems across the country.
