Police say a patient stabbed a doctor in an emergency room in Chicago in the chest

CHICAGO – On Monday afternoon, a patient in the emergency room at Provident Hospital hurt two staff members. One of them, an emergency room doctor, was stabbed in the chest.

Around 1:11 p.m., the crime happened in the 500 block of E. 51st St., which is where the hospital is on the South Side of the city.

Two staff members were hurt, and Provident Hospital reported that they are both in stable condition.

FOX 32 confirmed that one of the victims was a doctor who worked in an emergency room. They were stabbed in the chest and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were described as being in fair condition.

Police in Chicago say the suspect walked up to the 56-year-old ER doctor with a sharp object and stabbed him in the chest. The criminal was caught right away, and Area Detectives are now looking into what happened.

FOX 32 has learned that the doctor was taken from Provident to UC because Provident is not a surgery center.

Information about the second wounded worker, such as their job at the hospital and how bad their injuries are, has not been made public.

Provident Hospital said they wouldn’t say anything else because they wanted to protect the privacy of both staff members.

It’s also not clear why the attack happened right now.

The following comment was made by Provident Hospital:

“There is more and more violence against healthcare workers, and it is wrong.” While they’re at work, no one should have to worry about their safety. This problem goes beyond physical harm; it affects the mental and emotional health of everyone on our team, which in turn affects the care we can give. We are still dedicated to giving our patients the best care possible, but we also need to recognize that healthcare settings should be safe for both patients and workers.
