Third Victim Found in Fiery Wyoming Highway Tunnel Crash, Investigators Confirm

Green River, Wyoming — Police say they found a third body on Sunday in the wreckage of a fiery crash involving 26 cars and trucks in a Wyoming highway tunnel.

On Friday, there was an accident on Interstate 80 near the small Wyoming town of Green River that badly hurt at least five people. After the crash, there was a fire in the tunnel that destroyed six commercial cars and two passenger vehicles.

By Sunday, most of the damage had been taken away, and Sgt. Jason Roascio of the Wyoming Highway Patrol said that there were only about 10 cars left in the tunnel.

He did say that snow was making it take longer for federal and state agents to go from car to car trying to piece together what happened.

Roascio said, “We’re hoping that this is the last death.”

More information about the three deaths had not been made public yet.

Photos that were sent out on Sunday showed the burned-out remains of two cars inside the tunnel.

There was an accident in the westbound tube of the twin tunnel under Castle Rock, a sandstone creation that stands tall over the town of Green River in the southwest of the state.

The accident and fire that followed shut down the interstate, which is Wyoming’s main road system for going east to west. Traffic had to be shifted through Green River.

The tunnel going east was supposed to reopen on Wednesday and handle traffic going both ways for now. Engineers haven’t been able to say when the westbound tunnel will be ready to use again.
